Excelsior Youth Center students cut the red ribbon celebrating a newly built greenhouse on its 33-acre Aurora campus. Designed and built by nine of Excelsior’s students with the guidance and support of Carl Minard, the greenhouse will provide year-round plants, science experiments and herbs/spices for the students’ Culinary Arts Class. “I could have done the work by myself but that wasn’t the point,” explains Minard. “It was hard, tedious work from May to October. The girls spent days just digging the hole with pick axes and shovels, poured the concrete by hand and learned to use tools to build the structure.”
